A follow-up to our Apr. 30 ‘Phryne’ report

From the President

Sometimes taking a stand offends people. Last week, as your NPC President, I made some remarks in the Record about the 9-1 Board of Governors vote against rehanging Phryne that offended many NPC members. If my remarks were objectionable to you, I'm sorry. I meant no offense. But the board vote was overwhelming. The board vote stands. And I'II say it again: It's time to end this unremitting debate and move on. Don Larrabee, NPC President in 1973 and one of the hardest working and most respected members of our Club, asked me if he could respond one last time, before the Fine Arts Committee of the Silver Owls moves to find Phryne a resting place. Given the emotions surrounding our painting, he should be heard, in the interests of fellowship and collegiality, which is our hallmark:

From Don Larrabee

Many long-time members remain offended by your message and have asked me to respond. They were bothered by its implications that the Club we joined many years ago was nothing but a place to drink and ogle a nude painting. It would not be the institution it is today if this were the case. Those who cared enough to spend money on Phryne's restoration as art that was part of our history are not to be faulted for their love of tradition. They cannot be blamed for feeling that a vocal minority who were active in the Women's National Press Club and the Washington Press Club seem to have driven the board decision, which had the effect of rubbing salt in a wound that went back many years and was healed, we thought, when women were admitted to membership in 1971. I was one of those who felt we were wrong to deny women access to a journalists' club, but I also felt we righted that wrong 25 years ago. Many women quickly joined the Club without batting an eye or uttering a complaint about the Club's historic artwork. The question of disposition remains. Many members believe that Phryne is a "keeper," and we want to keep her.

Anselmo Wins Board Seat

Joseph C. Anselmo, space technology editor for Aviation Week and SpaceTechnology magazine, led a field of three to win a seat on the Board of Governors to fill two and a half years of an unexpired term. A total of 193 ballots were cast in the special election May 1, with Anselmowinning 98 votes, Jeffrey Winograd, 72 and Ivan Scott, 22.

Membership Meeting

Plan to attend the general membership meeting at noon on Thurs., June 4, in the First Amendment Lounge. Lunch will be served.

"The Philadelphia Story"

Join us Thurs., May 28, for "The Philadelphia Story," starring Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. This classic movie, for which Grant won 1940's Best Actor Oscar, will be shown at 7 p.m.

Show Boat's A'comin!

Va. Wine Tasting Tour May 16 16

A chartered bus leaves the Club at 9:30 a.m., Sat., May 16, for tastings at two fine Virginia wineries, first at Tarara, where gourmet picnic lunches from the Red Fox Inn will be served, then to Breaux, the State's newest vineyard. Ex-Astronaut Jemison Promotes Science Education

Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman astronaut, spoke to the Club Apr. 29 "about the science education of our children." Jemison, an engineer, dancer, medical doctor and college professor, said "twelfth graders ranked near the bottom of industrialized countries in the Third Interational Math and Science Study. About science literacy, she said, "I'm not talking about creating a million nuclear physicists. We don't need them, but we do need 100 million citizens who can read an article in the newspapers and vote reasonably on an environmental issue, and prepare nutritional meals for their children."
She said a survey by the Bayer Corporation and National Science Foundation show that "scientists overwhelmingly believe that every student should be encouraged and supported to develop their full science potential in elementary school regardless of whether or not they're the promising kids that are going to grow up to be professional scientists." Jemison said the heart of science are in the words, "I think, I wonder and I understand."
With a twinkle in her eye, she said, "we need to understand sun cycles, and geothermal heat, and we need to understand why people persist in saying that Republicans and Democrats are different species and can't crossbreed." Jemison asked, "If we can put a man on the moon, how come we can't teach our children science?" Chiding rote memorization, she quoted students: "Proteins are composed of mean old acids," and "the earth makes a resolution every 24 hours."

IT CAME AS A COMPLETE SURPRISE …

Miss America (Katherine Shindle): I understand that, Douglas, it's your birthday! (Laughter, Applause.) So we totally have a cake for you. And we need to light it. All right. And it says--

Mr. Harbrecht: Hey, Mom, Dad, if you're watching out there, I don't believe this. (Laughter).

Ms. Shindle: It says "Happy Birthday, President." Okay, make a wish.

Mr. Harbrecht: Okay. Thank You.

Miss America Aims at Scholarships, HIV

Miss America Kate Shindle focused on scholarships and HIV prevention at an NPC luncheon Apr. 30. Since September, she has visited dozens of schools across America and some of them "have truly allowed me to breathe a sigh of relief that our young people are getting the HIV prevention education, and being empowered with the information that will save them." She said "our most powerful tool with respect to HIV is dialogue ... dialogue that does not pass judgment." Miss America said every hour of every day two American teenagers contract HIV. And half of all new AIDS cases are in people under the age of 25."
She also said the Miss America Organization is a key partner of a new initiative by the Citizen Scholarship Foundation of America (CSFA), known as National Scholarship Month, which begins May 1. It will "focus attention on the tremendous scholarship need, which is still not being met." It calls for renewed commitment from the private sector. Miss America said CSFA "has pledged to double its effort, assisting at least 110,000 students annually with a minimum of $110 million in scholarship funds by the year 2000."

NPC Forum Focuses on Charity Tax Ventures

The proliferation of joint ventures involving tax-exempt groups and why the IRS is eyeing some of them will be explored May 21 from 9-11 a.m. at a Club forum. It will examine the impact of the legal contest on charitable organizations and will discuss reasons for proliferation of these ventures in recent years and whether they benefit society or enrich individuals unfairly. Panelists will include Marcus Owens, director of the IRS Exempt Organization Division; Michael I. Sanders, author of "Partnerships and Joint Ventures Involving Tax- Exempt Organizations"; Curt Weeden, president of the Corporate Contributions Management Academy; Karen Aidem, president of Community Wealth Ventures, Inc.; and Robert Louthian, an attorney at McDermott, Will & Emery. For details, contact Lew Saret at 202 637-9006.

Harvard Russia Expert to Speak

"Perspectives on Russia's Stalled Transition," will be the topic for a Harvard-NPC sponsored program Tues., May 12, featuring Timothy J. Colton, director of the Davis Center for Russian Studies at Harvard University. The talk begins at 7:15 p.m. with refreshments and a cash bar starting at 6:30. Admission is $15.

Cigar Happy Hour!

Cigar and bourbon enthusiasts can wind down at the Club's second Cigar Happy Hour on Thurs., May 21, from 7-9 p.m. Enjoy a Fuentes 858 Maduro or a Monte Cruz Robusto along with a tasting of Jim Beam's Small Batch Bourbon Collection. Also featured is Cigaré Custom Blend Cognac which retails for more than $100 a bottle. The cigars, tastings, food and beverages are $20 for members and $25 for guests. Call 202 662-7501 to reserve.

Book Sale a Success

Help Wanted: Members Who Can Update the
Internet NPC Record
Repeating the call for members who can volunteer to take turns producing the website version of the Record. Currently it looks like one good approach would be to seek members who have all the skills along with technical access—copy editing/some rewrite, direct HTML coding, Photoshop and online access. But doing the whole thing can be very time-consuming. Teams could be constructed collaboratively, perhaps involving persons to handle the editorial/HTML coding—using a prep file prepared first by another team member—with perhaps a third handling the Photoshop chores, and a fourth who's willing to handle mid-issue updates.
We are working mainly by e-mail. The basic weekly issue goes together Tuesday evenings (based on files from the print edition (which become available Tuesday afternoon, if all goes well), and Wednesday mornings. Currently I have been doing the prep file earlier on Tuesdays. Mid-issue updates are ad-lib. Call Martin Kuhn, Chair of the Internet Record Subcommittee, 301 986-1942, for info. Or use this "mail-to" link: mkuhn@pop.dn.net
